Rosie kitty vet visit [May. 29th, 2013|08:46 pm]

I took Rosie kitty to the vet today because her left eye was swollen almost shut, had a lot of gunk in it and was bright red. As I figured he would, the vet told me that I absolutely had to get Rosie in for surgery. However, things have gotten worse now. Rosie has an abscess that is affecting both one of her teeth AND her left eye, and the eye may have to be surgically removed as well as the teeth. Now the estimated $2,000 for the tooth removal has gone up to as much as $3,000 when they factor in the eye removal.

I told the vet there is absolutely no way I can afford that much money. My total bank balance at the moment is $3,039. I could manage $1,500, and maybe even $2,000 if I were very, very careful and neither of the other cats got sick before I started earning money again, but definitely not $3,000. I do not know anyone I can borrow from. I don't have family members that I can ask for money. Monster has no money. I can't get a loan or a payment plan because I don't have steady, predictable employment right now. I even considered applying for a veterinary credit card thingy and lying about my employment, but if they contacted my supposed employer that employer would just say I wasn't working for them at the moment.

The vet said that if I can't pay for the surgery, I will have to "surrender" Rosie to them. Then they would do the surgery and give her to a cat rescue organization for rehoming. He said if I love her, I will do what is best for her, and that means getting the surgery for her even if it means I have to give her up. He also implied without saying it directly that I shouldn't have three cats if I can't pay vet bills for them. (This is the first time I've had trouble paying vet bills except for one occasion when I borrowed money from my sister for a few days, until payday, to pay for Poupée to have a diagnostic ultrasound. I have enough money for normal vet bills, just not for vet bills that cost an entire month's wages.)

I've set up an IndieGoGo funding page. I don't have any perks to offer, at least not in material things, but I'm thinking of maybe saying, "For a donation of X amount, I will give you Y pages of free editing services," or "I will proofread your next writing assignment," or "I will beta read your next fanfic," or something like that.

If you can donate anything at all, even a couple of dollars, I'd be very grateful. I've made my IndieGoGo wish to be $2,500. If you can't afford to donate anything, would you consider sharing the link?

there is another way to look at this...

The vet can also offer a sliding scale fee instead of putting this all on you.

You are not a bad cat mum. You are a loving and generous cat mum.

The idea that people who are: disabled, on a fixed income, on welfare or public assistance of some sort...or any other thing: ought not to own pets//is a prejudice.

I think offering some kind of proof-reading or critiquing of writing is the sort of thing that would be very much appreciated and would work for your donation strategy.

I've checked through some of the other donation pages. Some of the offerings are more "whimsical" such as "a kiss and hug from" the pet that one is helping w the donation etc. Or a hand-written thank-you note. Or a place on the list of donors according to how much you've donated etc.

But I think the editing thing is the way to go.

I am sooooo utterly sorry that you are going through this with your Rosie. My heart is breaking a bit for both of you.

the vet might be doing what he feels is right but he also needs to stop shaming you.

thinking of you.

Re: there is another way to look at this...

Yeah--even people who are in good work situations may not have that much money to spare at a moment's notice. I didn't like that vet's shaming behavior either. Why can't they at least do a sliding scale or payment plan? Then again, most vet clinics want payment at the time of service. :(

I saw molasses' post and contributed. The folks at kittypix may be able to contribute if you check with the mods about putting up a post with a photo of the kitty--just an idea.

Wishing you and Rosie the best of luck!

Oh man! I'm so sorry to hear that; I'll do what I can, it'll only be like $5 though because my work situation isn't so good either. I'll share it around though!

So you have to currently be working to have that veterinary credit card? Ugh, that sucks. I wish that vet would work out some kind of deal because many people don't have that much money to spare. I posted it the link on Facebook.

Came over from cat_adoration

I just donated. You may want to check around with other area vets. As I recall someone on one of the LJ cat sites had a similar situation and by checking with other vets (after someone suggested this) she was able to get a procedure that her vet said was going to cost several thousands of dollars for less than a thousand. It never hurts to shop around.

Rosie is a beautiful kitty - I hope everything works out for her. Would you mind if I friended you, so I can see how she's doing?

awww poor poor kitty. ok so i was kinda wary of "kitty sos, in need of donations" because of scammers using the heart srrings but you don't seem like a scammer to me.
but fortunatly I have a little cash to spare so I will chip. Hope it's alright if i add you?
I hope rosie gets the surgery she needs. And i'll pass this on in my own journal,I don't know who will see it but i will pass it on.

Best of luck to you and Rosie kitty! I wish I could help, but I've been jobless for 2 years and am taking care of 3 kitties, one being elderly and costing a lot in health issues, so all I can send is my hopes and best wishes.

And your vet stinks--may they learn what it is to be poor. I hope you can find a better vet who will charge a sliding scale and let you pay back over time. *hugs*
